What is a Sentence?

👉 A sentence is a group of words that is  put together to express a complete thought.

 you see a really cute kitten.
kitten  is a word and it names the animal but it doesn't
express a complete thought about the kitten. A complete thought might be the kitten is cute

 A sentence is made up of two main parts first  there is the

subject that's the part that tells us who or what the sentence is about who or what  is this sentence about that's right it's about the kitten so the subject of this sentence is  the kitten let's read these sentences and find the subject the first sentence says the boy is  wearing a costume who is this sentence about that's right the boy the subject of this sentence  is the boy now let's look at the next one ally is swinging who is this sentence about  that's right ally is the subject of this sentence let's try one more a giraffe has a long  neck what is the subject of this sentence that's right this sentence is about a giraffe the subject tells who or  what the sentence is about but we call the rest of the sentence the predicate

The predicate tells us something about the subject let's look at this sentence children are playing  we know that the subject is children but what is the predicate remember the predicate tells us  something about the subject in this sentence the predicate is are playing the predicate  is telling us what the children are doing let's practice finding the predicate in these  sentences the first sentence says the beagle is running we know that the subject is the beagle so  what is the predicate the predicate is is running the predicate is telling us what the beagle is  doing the next sentence says these trees are tall we know that the subject is these  trees so what is the predicate that's right the predicate is are tall the  predicate is describing the subject in this sentence let's try one more Maria is at the library what is the predicate in this sentence that's right the predicate is at the library  this predicate is telling us where Maria is let's practice drawing a line to divide  these sentences between the subject the part that tells who or what the sentence  is about and the predicate the part that tells us something about the subject so the  first sentence says yogurt is my favorite snack we can draw a line between  the subject and the predicate yogurt is the subject and the rest of the sentence  is the predicate telling us something about yogurt the next sentence says the rain is making puddles in the yard where can we draw a line to  divide the two parts of this sentence that's right we can draw a line after the rain the  rain is the subject is making puddles in the yard is the predicate one more Maaz plays violin  where would we draw the line that's right between Maaz and plays because Maaz is the  subject and the predicate is plays the violin nice work let's review everything  you've learned about sentences first a sentence is a complete thought next a sentence has two parts there is the subject  telling who or what the sentence is about and the predicate which tells us something about  the subject.

➤Some Examples of subject and Predicate are;

1.The sun (subject)/was sparkling splendidly (predicate).

2. The canines (subject)/were woofing boisterously (predicate).

3. The beautiful young lady (subject)/was wearing a blue gown (predicate).

4. My more sibling (subject)/serves in the military (predicate).

 Remember when you write a sentence always begin with a capital letter and end with  a period and also remember to always be clever.
